Application in Taiwan: ProArc relies on laser cladding of tight internal contours for steelworks components

Steel production and processing is a "tough" business – one which puts exceptional strain on the tools and components used in it. For the repair and functionalisation of their surfaces, the standard technique is laser cladding. But standard laser processing heads are often not suitable when it comes to internal contour cladding with access aperture diameters of less than 100 mm. This is where Pallas GmbH & Co. KG offers a solution with its iClad® processing head for laser cladding of internal contours. This device facilitates laser cladding in access aperture diameters down to 30 mm and to a working depth of up to 1,000 mm, enabling critical components to be rebuilt or enhanced with wear protection coating. One of the companies that rely on this technology is the United ProArc Corporation, a renowned manufacturer of industrial CNC cutting system, CNC drilling machines and welding automation equipment located in Taiwan...

Worn knife seatings in the best of hands

It's all go in the timber processing industry. Every day, in a non-stop process, one after another, countless logs of up to 22 metres in length are debarked, measured to the intended format of the final product and processed into lumber. The extreme stress on the equipment and tools in the production line used for this process is something about which the company Gebr. Eigelshoven GmbH & Co. KG – a state-of-the-art sawmill in Würselen near Aachen with more than 130 years of tradition in the trade – can tell a thing or two. When it comes to repairing heavily worn circular knife tool-holding fixtures, their go-to solution is laser cladding performed by Pallas GmbH & Co. KG, a proven specialist in the repair of highly stressed components...

Deadlines for drivelines

The demands on modern automobiles are virtually impossible to achieve. They have to be dynamic and powerful, yet at the same time eco-friendly, economical, quiet and safe. The driveline plays a crucial role in meeting these performance requirements. No wonder, then, that – in the prototype stage – the tests for new drive shafts and joints are also extremely demanding...

The right choice for reliable drive systems

In production plants where torque needs to be transmitted or transformed, cost-effectiveness depends on the availability and efficiency of the machinery. Even under extreme operating conditions, drive systems are subject to an increasing demand for longer service life, higher speed and greater efficiency. Downtimes must be avoided under all circumstances. This is a challenge which, with its state-of-the-art production facilities, the company Wolfgang Preinfalk GmbH, a leading manufacturer of custom gearboxes and drive systems headquartered in St. Ingbert in Germany's Saar region, has been meeting successfully for over 40 years...

Thermal coatings for highly stressed components

It ain´t easy for components in industrial key applications. Growing pressure on costs, performance and time constantly push them to the limits of their capacity. The greatest breakdown risks are abrasion, erosion and corrosion. Today, one established standard for prolonging service life and increasing stress resistance is the thermal spray coating of critical components. Virtually unlimited combination options of coating material and substrate offer enormous scope for surface replacement, regeneration, repair, upgrading and enhancement…

Room enough in the narrowest of pipes

Whether they are transmission components, cylinder liners or conveyor systems, the problem is the same: in industrial manufacturing processes, heavy-duty components are always the Achilles' heel of overall plant efficiency. Customised surface treatment per laser cladding can render such components fit for the extreme stresses of their tasks. But this style of optimisation technology is challenged when it comes to difficult-to-access surfaces or bores...

Long-lasting corrosion resistance for sealing seats

In transport media and industrial equipment, for example in power stations, seals count among the components that have to withstand particularly high stresses and strains. Protecting them against corrosive attacks from aggressive media calls for procedures that guarantee maximum effectiveness and durability. The iClad® processing head made by the company Pallas GmbH & Co. KG opens up internal laser cladding possibilities that conventional standard optical heads have so far not been able...

Strategic partnership paves the way for serial production

Functional surfaces are a key factor for the quality, efficiency and competitiveness of products and processes that are subject to complex strains and stresses. Tailor-made materials and procedures ensure resistance to abrasion, erosion and corrosion – the very factors that significantly influence the service life and life cycle of plants and Equipment...

Rotating processing head gives worn-out train engines a new lease of life

Laser cladding is a well-proven technology for repairing or optimising engine parts – because of its reliable reproducibility, marginal thermal component stress and low cost of mechanical reworking to final size, which have made it indispensable...

A small processing head with great potential

In the race against time, the specialists at the Dutch company Stork Gears & Services BV, Rotterdam, have made a name for themselves all over the world in sectors like the shipbuilding, petrochemical, wind power and steel industries. In all of these branches, the maximum uptime of efficient gearboxes and associated drive systems is of crucial importance...

New process for narrow pipes

The greatest challenge in many processes is not the question of "How?" but of "How long?". All too often, tool breakage or damage leads to unplanned production stops. There are many reasons for such wear and tear to tools and components: abrasion, corrosion, erosion, stress cracks, thermal-mechanical or chemical fatigue...

The high art of surface treatment

Surfaces today are a sophisticated business: ingenious materials and processes render them fit for heavy-duty strain, reliable performance and long service lives. Whether for wear protection, repair, cleaning, modification, corrosion control or function expansion – treated surfaces make components more durable, processes more efficient and products more competitive. No wonder that the demands on modern surface treatment are so complex...
